Education is of prime importance in Cedar City and its surrounding communities. Iron County has three pre-schools (two in partnership with Southern Utah University), seven elementary schools, two middle schools, three high schools. There are two private schools as well.

The public schools are governed by an elected five-member board that prides itself on community involvement. Each school has it's own PTA, assuring parent involvement. Internet access and computer literacy is part of every student's education and a major component of the district's recognition of the need to prepare students for constant change. There are many specialized programs available to meet the unique needs of students with special concerns.

Cedar City SchoolCedar City is also home to George Wythe College which is “is boldly dedicated to building Statesmen using the methods which trained great Statesmen from Joan of Arc to Washington, Jefferson and Adams to Lincoln, Churchill and Gandhi to Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mother Teresa.” George Wythe offers both bachelors and advanced degrees.

Southern Utah University, founded in 1897, is the fastest growing University in the state of Utah. SUU is considered a "crown jewel" of higher education. Set amid colored sandstone formations unique to southern Utah, Southern Utah University is the result of dedicated pioneers working against seemingly insurmountable odds.

A four-year comprehensive university, SUU offers both advanced education and public service. Known for academic excellence, students have a high rate of acceptance in graduate schools.

Southern Utah University is a regional, comprehensive four-year university. Its campus is an important center for advanced learning and public service. It is fully accredited member of the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
