Winter Driving Tips - SLOW DOWN

After driving around today and seeing about 50 cars either off the road or sliding off the road I thought it would be appropriate to post some tips for driving in the snow. Feel free to add your own in the comments section.

SLOW DOWN - I really cannot stress this enough. I don’t know how many times I have watched someone fly by me then 5 mins later I am helping a group of people push you out because you have slid off the road. Slow down I promise whatever you are rushing for isn’t worth hurting yourself or someone else.

Front Wheel Drive and 4 Wheel Drive vechiles do much better in the snow. If you don’t have one slow down an additional 10 MPH.

If you drive a truck. Put something in the bed to weigh it down. Lots of people put bags of salt over the rear axle. Its serves a double purpose, it gives you extra weight and better traction to your rear tires and when you get stuck you can use the salt to melt the snow.

Keep your gas tank full. This way if you do slide off the road you can stay warm until someone comes along to help you.

Keep some food and drink in your car. Should be obvious but if you are stuck in the mountains somewhere you will be happy you remembered food and drink.

If you do get stuck do not leave your car. Ever notice how they always find the Car but never find the people. If you do get lost and stuck don’t leave your car. It is much easier to spot a car from helicopter or airplane then it is to find a person. Your best bet is to stay with the car.

Well that should be enough tips for today. If you have any of your own winter driving tips please leave them in the comments section.
