The name, Parowan, comes from the Piute Indian word for marsh. In the 1800s, Parowan had a tannery, sawmill, cotton mill, small factories for making saddles and harnesses, furniture and cabinets, shoes, and guns as well as carpentry and blacksmith shops. By the 1900s both sheep and dairy ranches were well established. Local sheep farms were noted for their quality Rambouillet sheep, and the Southern Utah Dairy Company, a cooperative venture begun in 1900, produced dairy products and was best known for its "Pardale Cheese." An ideal location for families, homes include everything from updated cottages dating back to the 1800s to magnificent custom homes on large acreages.
