Why They Call Us the Festival City: A Local’s Guide to Summer in Cedar
If you live in Cedar City, you already know that our backyard is packed with world-class mountain bike trails, hidden canyons, and rugged dirt roads. But when summertime hits, the action isn't just up in the mountains. It spills right out onto Main Street and the university campus.
There’s a reason this place is officially dubbed the Festival City.
If you're looking to fill your summer calendar or want a reason to head into town after a day of exploring, here are the absolute staples that return year after year to keep everyone entertained.
1. The Utah Shakespeare Festival
You don't have to jet off to New York or London to see world-class, award-winning theater. Every single summer, the Utah Shakespeare Festival takes over the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts. Whether you're a hardcore theater fan or just love the high-energy vibe of the outdoor Greenshow before the main event, this is the crown jewel of our town's summer culture. It runs all summer long, meaning you have plenty of chances to catch a show.
2. The July Jamboree Car Show
If you like classic lines, loud engines, and a classic American block party, the July Jamboree is a non-negotiable. For one spectacular Saturday in July, vintage hot rods, custom trucks, and classic cars completely take over downtown Main Street. It’s packed with food vendors, local vendors, and incredible crowds. It’s loud, it’s nostalgic, and it is the ultimate definition of a hometown summer tradition.
3. The Cedar City Renaissance Faire
Every summer, the park transforms into a full-blown medieval village. The Renaissance Faire brings knights in armor, jousting tournaments, bagpipes, and artisans right into our backyard. It is incredibly fun, wildly entertaining for kids, and one of those unique events where you can grab a giant turkey leg and just spend the afternoon people-watching.
4. Local Car Shows & Cruise-Ins
The July Jamboree isn't the only time the car community shows out. Throughout the warmer months, you'll regularly stumble across smaller car shows, park cruise-ins, and parking lot meetups. Keep your eyes on the local community calendars, because on any given weekend, you're likely to find a row of beautiful, polished vintage machines gleaming under the Southern Utah sun.
The Best Part of a Cedar Summer?
You don't have to choose between a rugged outdoor lifestyle and a vibrant community culture. You can spend your morning hiking through a colorful mountain wash or riding 13 miles of singletrack, and spend your evening walking Main Street with a cold soda, checking out custom hot rods.
It’s unpolished, it’s active, and it is exactly why we love calling this place home. What's your favorite summer event in town?
