When Southern Utah Gives You May Snow: A Cedar City Adventure
When Southern Utah Gives You May Snow…
There’s an old saying about making lemonade when life hands you lemons.
But around Cedar City, the weather plays by different rules.
A few days ago, right in the middle of May, life did not give us lemons. It gave us a few inches of fresh, unseasonal snow up in the mountains, plus a couple of wildly windy days down in the valley that had everyone feeling a little restless.
And if you know anything about the dirt backroads around here, you know spring snow has a very specific personality.
At first, it looks beautiful. Then it melts. Then it turns into the kind of clay mud that would love nothing more than to swallow your tires and ruin your cute little sunset adventure.
So chasing sunset on the usual dirt roads felt like a bold choice. And by bold, I mean possibly stupid.
Which brings us to the real question.
How do you make lemonade out of a May snowstorm without calling a tow truck?
You find a forgotten, unmaintained paved road.
I headed up an old asphalt route that twists into the ridges above town. The county does not maintain it, most normal traffic ignores it, and the pavement is cracked, weathered, and honestly a little dramatic. But it had two very important things going for it: it got me high enough to reach the fresh snow line, and it gave me solid, mud-free ground under my feet.
That was good enough for me.
By the time I reached the top, the wind was absolutely ripping. The kind of wind that makes you question your hair, your jacket choice, and maybe your entire personality.
But the payoff was worth it.
Standing alone on that deserted stretch of old pavement, with snow tucked across the ridges and the valley dropping away below me, the chaos of the week started to quiet down.
The contrast was ridiculous in the best way. The mountain air was freezing and sharp, but the horizon was glowing with this heavy golden light that made everything feel softer than it actually was.
That is one of my favorite things about living in Southern Utah.
The weather is weird. The plans change. The road you thought you were taking might be muddy, closed, sketchy, or just not worth the risk. But if you are willing to pivot, there is almost always another way to get outside.
Sometimes it is a dirt trail.
Sometimes it is a mountain road.
And sometimes it is a cracked old piece of asphalt nobody thinks about anymore.
That is the beauty of living near Cedar City. You do not always need a big plan, a long drive, or a perfect weather forecast. Sometimes the best views show up because your original plan failed and you were stubborn enough to try something else.
No lemons required.
Just a little local strategy, a good jacket, and fresh mountain air.
