Three Peaks Recreation Area: The After-Work Adventure Hiding in Cedar City’s Backyard

There is a distinct advantage to living in Southern Utah, and it usually hits me right around 5:00 PM.

Most people finish their workday and head straight into traffic, errands, or the couch. Me? I grab my dusty shoes, head about 15 minutes out to Three Peaks Recreation Area, and find a dirt path to wander.

Technically, Three Peaks is known for its mountain biking and OHV trails. And yes, it is great for that. But the easiest way to experience it is on foot, away from the busier routes, with absolutely no real plan.

I almost never take the same route twice. I just pick a direction, follow whatever looks interesting, wander past the rock formations, and see what the desert feels like that day. I like to say I get “lost,” but honestly, it is pretty hard to get truly lost at Three Peaks. It gives you just enough freedom to explore without feeling like you need a search and rescue team on standby.

There is, however, a very tactical reason I look for the spots where the trails fade out and the crowds disappear.

If you ever happen to stumble across me out here, standing near a boulder at sunset and laughing hysterically at absolutely nothing, don’t panic. I haven’t lost my mind. I am probably just deep into an audiobook, and when you are alone in the desert, there is no one around to judge you for giggling like a lunatic at a good chapter.

Honestly, that might be one of Three Peaks’ most underrated amenities.

That is the beauty of this place. In less than twenty minutes, I can go from analyzing market data to standing in the middle of a rugged, prehistoric-looking landscape watching the sky turn gold. It is raw, quiet, weird, beautiful, and right in our backyard.

This is one of the things I love most about living near Cedar City. You do not have to make a whole production out of getting outside. You can finish work, change your shoes, drive a few minutes, and suddenly you are surrounded by dirt roads, juniper trees, jagged rock, and enough open space to remember you are, in fact, a person and not just a walking inbox.

If getting outside requires a three-hour production where you live, Southern Utah might ruin you a little. Around here, adventure is basically sitting outside the office door waiting for you.

And Three Peaks? It is one of the best reminders that sometimes the good stuff is not far away.

Sometimes it is fifteen minutes from home, down a dirt road, right where you left it.
